Minnesota employees will not be able to access paid leave benefits from the State of Minnesota until January 1, 2026. Employers, however, have compliance obligations beginning in 2024. This guide summarizes Minnesota Paid Leave (MPL) and employer obligations in 2024 and beyond.

Background
MPL provides job protection and partial wage replacement to employees who are unable to work for at least seven days due to the following:

  • Employee’s physical or mental illness and treatment
  • Needing to care for a family member’s physical or mental illness and treatment
  • Needing time off due to a domestic assault, sexual abuse, or stalking
  • Parental leave to bond with the child after birth, foster, or adoption
  • To support a family member called to active duty

Paid leave can be used for a maximum of 20 weeks in a calendar year for a combination of qualifying events. A single event can be used for a maximum of 12 weeks.
