It’s unthinkable – the death of an employee, or an employee’s close family member. No one wants to think about it, let alone talk about it, but sadly we were recently reminded that people can be taken from us in a heartbeat.
Last weekend a tornado ripped through the small tight knit community of Beauregard, Alabama. About 10,000 people live in Beauregard, where there are a few stores, two schools and a volunteer fire department. In the blink of an eye the storm busted through the community at 170 mph, killed 23 people and injured 90.
How can employers support their community after such devastation?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right answer is to support the community the way that feels right and makes sense to the organization. Here are some ideas:
- Allow employees paid time off to help the community’s relief efforts
- Form teams to recruit and gather donations of food, clothing and personal items
- Work with local shelters and food pantries to determine the need for volunteers and supply interested employees
- Collect donations of money from companies and employees and give:
- Directly to families in need
- To the Red Cross
- To local shelters
- To area food pantries
- Start and manage a GoFundMe page
